What is the BACHb trial?

BACHb is an open-label randomised clinical trial of respiratory support in infants with acute bronchiolitis. We are conducting this research to compare different ways of providing breathing support to infants with bronchiolitis. Specifically, we wish to find out whether high-flow nasal cannula (‘high-flow’ or HFNC) is more effective than humidified oxygen in helping infants with moderate bronchiolitis, and if it is more effective than CPAP in infants with severe bronchiolitis.

Why we are conducting this research

Currently, there are a few different methods doctors and nurses can use to give infants support with their breathing. All these methods are used widely across the NHS and are known to be safe. However, we don’t know which method is the most effective at making infants get better quickly and to reduce the time they need to spend in hospital.

What we aim to achieve

Our aim is to find out whether high-flow nasal cannula (‘high-flow’ or HFNC) is more effective than humidified oxygen in helping infants with moderate bronchiolitis, and if it is more effective than CPAP in infants with severe bronchiolitis. We will assess the ‘effectiveness’ of the different treatments by comparing how long infants need to stay in hospital. In total we will include 1508 babies in this study.
